Program Details

The American Sign Language and Deaf Culture Associate in Arts Degree is designed to teach students to communicate effectively in American Sign Language as well as educate about the many facets of Deaf Culture and encourage participation in the Deaf Community. Upon program completion, students will be prepared for a multitude of careers working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. In combination with transfer admission requirements, this degree can help prepare students for bachelor's programs and certificates in Deaf Studies, Interpretation, Deaf Education and Social Services, among others. Fluent ASL students may have ASL 101 F waived with faculty approval and complete the degree by completing ANTH 105 F/105HF. This degree requires a total of 18-19 units in the major, in addition to other graduation requirements.

  1. Demonstrate effective communication in English and in American Sign Language (ASL) to apply in a variety of settings with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of American Deaf Culture and History that will allow students to interact in culturally appropriate ways with members of the Deaf Community.
  3. Identify local and national resources for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Late Deafened Adults to seek and promote developmental opportunities for self and for the Deaf Community.
